Saint Monica Church
Philadelphia, PA
Founded in 1895 and subsequently destroyed by fire in the late 1960’s, St. Monica Church was rebuilt in 1971 with great care given to a classical layout and materials. Reconstructed with a lower level church in addition to the main nave above, this building posed accessible issues on both levels. Traditional entrances with many stairs proved the need for a study to determine the most effective use of resources to fulfill an all inclusive use by the congregation.
Our work began with a study to target the best remedies for access to the upper and lower churches with a connection to the parking lot. Additional concerns were to create accessible bathroom facilities. The solution included additions to the west elevation for a new entrance with lobby and elevator and two fully accessible bathrooms. Pictured below is a short history of that process.
